Interaction Design and Innovation

Designer Mike Burton's Waterboard is an interesting application of interaction design
An exciting frontier is being explored in a multi-disciplinary approach and research collaboration between
the CIO Research and Interaction Design. Prof Jörn Meeseter has joined the School of Informatics and Design
at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).
The collaboration is a research focused but will also involve the development of an interaction design
community in the Western Cape to help grow innovation, academic research and research and development.
Creative innovators and start-ups will benefit from the new programs to be developed on Interaction Design
at CPUT. Designers can become qualified at undergraduate, masters and doctorate levels. This capability in
the enterprise will help many of our corporates in industries such as retail, textiles, agriculture and public
services.

Technology advances such as mobile, the internet, social networks, augmented reality, near field communication
and wireless communication is changing the way we live and interact on a day to day basis.
Interaction brings together a number of related disciplines:
- Industrial design
- Human factors & ergonomics
- Cognitive psychology
- Human computer interaction
- Design research
- Architecture
- User interface design

The growth of hand held devices is taking user interface design to a new level
Interaction design (abbreviated as IxD) defines the structure and behavior of interactive systems.
Interaction Designers strive to enhance the flow and interaction between humans, services, products,
technology and qualities such as aesthetics and convenience. Devices used can be anything or any
system or service including computers, mobile and hand held devices, appliances, furniture or anything
that people interact with in their lives.
The practice often involves the embedding of information technology into the complex reality of the
social and physical environment. Interactivity, however, is not limited to technological systems and
can be applied to developing products and services as well as enterprise organizations.
